Bisphenol-A, or BPA, a chemical that has been linked to several diseases including breast cancer, can be found in numerous household items and the toxin has been detected in over 93 percent of Americans. However, starting 2011 Connecticut residents should be free of BPA when the state enforces its ban on the chemical.

On June 4, Gov. Jodi M. Rell signed legislation that would ban the toxin, which is used to make shatterproof plastic products such as baby food containers, baby bottles, reusable food containers and liners inside metal cans of food.

Keepsake ultrasounds, a recent trend popularized by expecting mothers, may soon become passé when the state enforces its limitations on the practice Wednesday. Effective July 1, ultrasounds that serve no diagnostic or medical purpose and are not ordered by a health professional will be banned in Connecticut.

However, Gina Beaudoin, the owner of A Tiny Perspective in Glastonbury, a company that provides families with keepsake ultrasound photos and DVD recordings, was quick to point out that her practice does in fact serve both a diagnostic and a medical purpose.

About 300 members of the state’s largest healthcare workers union converged on the state Capitol Wednesday to protest Republican Gov. M. Jodi Rell’s proposed budget cuts to health care services for children, the elderly, and the disabled.

Samantha Hand and Christina Roy of Network Inc. in Andover, a nonprofit which runs group homes and day programs for clients with developmental disabilities, said by proposing numerous cuts to programs and services,“Rell is making a promise that the quality of care in Connecticut will decrease.”

Exploring Mars in your own space pod is now possible with the touch of a button and it’s just one of many exhibits you’ll find only at the new Connecticut Science Center. The facility opened Friday and both children, as well as adults wandered its 10 galleries and 150 hands-on exhibits.

Nearly a decade in the making, the building with its magic carpet roof designed by Cesar Pelli of New Haven, has changed the skyline of downtown Hartford, but will it be able to change anything else?

Members of the Connecticut Public Housing Resident Network protested outside the governor’s office Friday, saying Gov. M Jodi Rell steals from the poor and gives to the rich.

Josephine Schouten, who has lived at a Meriden public housing complex for more than 20 years, sported a feathered cap and a Robin Hood costume to protest the funding cuts which will increase her rent.
